Dissection 19-Tape Box and Photo Book

5 Jan

DSR 118 – DISSECTION tape box, including comprehensive photo book of the history of Dissection, released in 2021 by @dsr_productions

I received the box already in September last year, but have not posted or shared much since. In addition, I was not sure how I could communicate my feelings of gratitude and admiration for this important release. Time has of course also been an issue. So weeks and months passed, until I finally, by the end of December, grabbed the camera and simply took a few selfie shots with the book. I may be making some funny faces – enjoy. Despite all earnestness, there have also been incredibly hilarious moments, which are also present in the book. The book and tapes are really a wonderful piece of memorabilia.

Flower Devils Photobook

15 May

I recently submitted an application for a photo book voucher from Saal Digital and received it promptly. 👍 The voucher code lasts for 14 days.

For compiling the book, I tested the free design software provided by Saal Digital. In the first step, I chose the book format and style: a simple matte look and 28 by 28 cm square format with 28 pages. Further pages can be added or pages deleted later (it became 34 pages). The software allows to switch between auto-layout and manual layout. The photos are added by simple drag and drop and the program arranges them in a smart way. In addition, one can chose between different layout templates, including text. ‎The only glitch I encountered was, that the text formatting kept jumping back to default value when changing the images. 👎 Else I found the software handy and easy to employ. 👍 I was especially curious how images and text spread across two pages would turn out.

Altogether I spent a whole day, selecting, editing and arranging the photos. It was a fun work and I found myself browsing archives spanning over nearly a decade.

I submitted my order digitally on the 9th of May. The voucher code was to be entered at the end of the order process. I ended up with a total of 11,90 Euro instead of 51,90 Euro (with shipping included). The confirmation e-mail told me to expect my book to be delivered on the 15th of May, but I already received it on Monday, 13th of May. 👍

I am very pleased with the overall quality. The matte paper is thick and not translucent at all. 👍 The biggest benefit to me are no fingerprints, as well as a natural look and feel, 👍 even though the colorful images may also look nice on glossy paper. The photos look vivid and show great detail in print. 👍 Any deviations in color are owed to my mean Photoshop skills (they show and I will correct them next time). Thanks to the layflat binding, the large images flow across two pages  seamlessly (without any offset). 👍 I am further pleased with the crispness of the lines on my black and white illustration. 👍 Finally, I allowed for a tiny QR code to be added at the backside. It is really unobtrusive, but can also be left out (for a 5 Euro extra fee).

I tested the basic photo book without any extras. Next time I may opt for a black background on the cover and a smaller font. It may also be interesting to try out options with leather or linen weave, though 20 Euro extra on top of the 40 Euro base price are a bit of an obstacle. ‎👎

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 8 thumbs up for the overall service, quality and free software

👎👎 2 thumbs down for the text formatting glitch in the software and the comparably high prices on professional photo books

Anna Krajewksi Photography

3 May

One of those rare occasions to have my photo taken (see last time). This time artist/photographer Anna Krajewski caught the moment with her Nikon camera. I like the result, the natural sunlight permeating through a dark roof of leaves tracing my silhouette. The other capture shows me bowing and lighting a candle before a flowering cherry tree, before gathering a handful of blossoms.

By the Willow, with Anne Ida Helmer Photography

19 Jun

I had the honor and pleasure of being photographed by professional photographer and photography teacher Anne Ida Helmer from Berlin.

We spent the whole day preparing and set to work in the evening, as the blue hour descended. Our meeting happened to coincide with the dark of the moon. The location is an old hollow willow tree close to the river. I refrained from a complex ritual set-up and instead focused on the act itself, burning Incense of Lilith and pouring libation of self-made pomegranate vodka for the spirits of the place. Whether we nurtured invisible specters or mainly ourselves – the religious aspect of occult ritual work is part of the complex topic explored by Anne in her ongoing series “Gravis” and “Krura“.

New Year’s Moon, Venus, Mars Alignment

1 Jan

The first evening of the year 2017 gave a magical sight: the sharp sickle of the waxing moon’s crescent aligned with Venus and Mars at around 7 pm. In addition one could see structures on the dark side of the moon, which are usually merge with the dark night sky and are not visible. Perhaps the sky was brighter tonight due to light being reflected by dust particles in the air from last night’s fireworks. The photos were taken at around 7 pm in Dresden Dölzschen.

Death Posture (Mortificatio)

29 May

Death posture II

Death Posture

Found a dead hornet on the floor. It looked as if some invisible hand had placed it there. No signs of violence, except for some white excretion around the stinger. A few days earlier I had seen a huge hornet in our apple tree. The presence of such animal, dead or alive, naturally evokes feelings of unease and discomfort. Yet it was fascinating to get closer. I call the photo “death posture”, not necessarily in reference to something esoteric or spiritual. I rather found the position interesting, which the animal takes upon death with legs crossed to a triple “X”. It’s deader than dead, but there is still a cold stare.

Vernal Sun Eclipse 2015

Solar eclipse 20 March 2015, coinciding with the vernal equinox and another black “super moon”

This time I photographed the event from the observatory Radebeul. Talking to other photographers and experienced hobby astronomers helped a great deal. Also there were a lot of different telescopes to try out. Some had filters that allowed for infrared frequencies to pass. The below photo is taken at the large Zeiss refractor. This way the sun activity could be observed closer…

Also note the little sun spot on above pictures…

Another had installed an adapter for smart phones, so people could photograph the eclipse with their smart phones through the telescope…

Simple and creative tricks for observing the eclipse without special glasses where shared as well…

1.) Through a skimmer 2.) through a perforrated carton, creating a nice pattern 3.) through the thumb and index finger forming an “o”

Now here are some more impressions. The the sky was clear, but the air above town was foggy. Also you may sense the gloomy atmosphere as the sunlight was dimmed during the eclipse…
