Forward Look 2016: Changes, Ideas, New Projects

31 Dec

Keywords: road maps, systematic approaches, reduction, advancement

Looking back at 2015, an important step was the birth of Planta Magica/ Pflanzenkunst. This project shall receive more attention in 2016. As I continue updating and publishing articles about plants at the new site, I may also start offering downloadable e-books and printed booklets. This can happen in the form of a journal series, discussing in depth certain plants under different aspects. The texts would be accompanied by my photography and plant inspired art. As an example can serve my article about the Mandrake, which was published in Anathema’s Pillars Journal.

Teufelskunst - Pflanzenkunst copy

Pertaining to Teufelskunst, which is now heading into its 5th year since the site went online, there shall also occur some changes. As the work with the green is now receiving space within a new frame, Teufelskunst will focus more on products and creations tied to certain esoteric lines of practice, these being foremost the qliphoth. On top of my list for 2016 are two spiritual maps to be offered as prints, as well as the continuation of my qliphothic incense line. Expect incense for Adramelech/Sammael very soon.

Along with this the Teufelskunst website shall undergo a trimming and the Garden will move here. I will cut it down to three site sections: the first is to give an overview of available products and tools. A second site section, the Devil’s Trumpet, is dedicated to interviews with other artists and the exploration of different esoteric concepts. Secondhand Literature, the third site section, will continue, despite animosity from different directions. I feel it is now more important than ever to appreciate but also to grow a critical view at the esoteric book genre and recent book releases. Besides, lets face it: some want to part with their esoteric library, others want to get their hands on sold out titles. Herein lies potential for magical experience to be passed on along with the books and, being handed on, their prestige grows as well.

What more? At the end of 2015 I found myself in a loop of crafting and delivering. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, I did not find any time at all to work on drawings or possible collaborations, as my mail-order kept me busy 24/7. I also did not find time to work on larger commissions, such as statues. The road to take in 2016 will be to focus on fewer products, higher quality and commissions that challenge me on an artistic level. In 2015 part of my life time got sucked up in bureaucracy, e.g. pertaining to customs and import regulations. I learned some new lessons there, however I doubt whether these were conducive experiences. Some things I wouldn’t do a second time.

In 2016 I hence hope to get to projects talked about in 2015. One would include doing artwork for a band. The other is a photography collaboration with Mr. James Patrick of Death Sex Electronics.

But before all of this enrolls, I look forward to spending New Year’s in a small circle of friends, then a relaxed and creative first week of January, where I see myself preparing a new print edition.

Stay tuned for more and thanks for the great feedback on my work.

Lets rock 2016

Plant Riddle #3 – Solution

30 Dec

As a reminder, I gave the following hints:

This time the herb I’m looking for is not a poisonous one – quite the contrary! It is a classic healing herb, which belongs in any herbal apothecary. A giant in the garden, its name relative is associated with an adversarial hero, who helped man and offended the gods…

The riddle included an illustration, which was to aid in finding the answer. Here is the drawing again:

The illustration hinted at the legend of Prometheus, who stole the fire from the olymp in the shaft of a Giant Fennel (Ferula communis). The drawing also shows the planetary ruler (Mercury) and associated element (Fire), which apply to both herbs. Hence the relative I was looking for, was the Common Fennel (Feoniculum vulgare). I admit this time the riddle was a little more tricky.

Thanks to everyone, who commented and shared their ideas! It was great fun reading your remarks and seeing the chain of thoughts that lead most of you to the right answer. Other suggestions included angelica, dill, chamomile and yarrow. Since Angelica had been mentioned often, I’m sharing here for comparison my sigillum for it:

Angelica

Some of you recognized, the difference in foliage and some other elements. I feel inspired though to give this image, which is already a bit older, a make-over and add planetary as well as some more hints at its folkloristic and magical attributions…

4th Sunday of Advent

22 Dec

This has been a magical evening spent with a friend, who has known me for over 25 years. It was her idea to go for a photo tour. Whatever she does, she gives 200%. She brought a tripod and heavy camera. I was the opposite: light camera, no tripod. I’m excited to see her photos. One thing is already for certain: we had a blast. Now we were not the only ones in town with a photo plan. At some places we had to wait for others, who had already set up their equipment to move. Seldom have I seen Dresden that busy on a Sunday night.

Plant Riddle #3

17 Dec

Only few days left until the Winter Solstice, I am excited to share my next plant riddle with you. This time the herb I’m looking for is not a poisonous one – quite the contrast! It is a classic healing herb, which belongs in any herbal apothecary. A giant in the garden, its name relative is associated with an adversarial hero, who helped man and offended the gods.

The riddle is again accompanied by a new illustration I did earlier in autumn and which may help or confuse…

Which is the plant in question?

Sharing this here as well…

New Plant Riddle

The game is as usual: guess the plant depicted and leave a comment with your suggestion! If you have been following my recent postings on my new herbalism blog you will easily find the plant in question. A hint: it has to do with autumn. 😉

Lunar Eclipse September 2015

1 Oct
Mondfinsternis September 2015

“Lunar Rebirth”, 28 September 2015, Volkssternwarte Adolph Diesterweg, Radebeul

This was a very special event for me and a dream come true. I have experienced the “blood moon” that occurs during a lunar eclipse intensely and in different ways before, each time doing workings of a different nature. But I have never actually seen one. Instead clouds and bad weather. Would tonight be different?

It didn’t look like that. Half asleep I traveled through a near empty town at 2 am in the night and walked the dark way up to the observatory in Radebeul, worried, since all I could see were clouds. I arrived about 3.20 pm. I had been alone all the way and was surprised to find that quite a few other night owls and moon addicts were already present. The sky wouldn’t clear up. Instead we got to enjoy a presentation of impressive photos taken during former eclipses, such as the lunar eclipse of 2007, 2010 and 2011 as well as the Venus transits of 2004 and 2012, and then moved on to the planetarium…

Just as the projection started came the news we all had been waiting to hear. At once all ran outdoors to catch a glimpse of the reddened moon as it was just entering the earth’s umbra. A few minutes later the beginning spectacle was again covered by clouds. Some went back inside for the projection. I decided to stay and wait…

4.19 am

4.19 am

Temperatures had gone down to 5 °C, the South-Western sky was dark and cloudy. Occasionally a thin silvery sickle and finally only a dark red spectre gleamed up behind black clouds only to vanish again in darkness a few seconds later. It was still mesmerizing to watch, as if the bleeding moon wanted to hide and veil itself as it fully immersed in the shadow of the earth.

I took some more or less blurry photos during this period, which are pasted into one image below. But the truly spectacular moment was when the moon emerged from the earth’s shadow. This was also the moment I captured through the telescope and which you see on the title image. This photo would not have been possible without the help of Martin and the rest of the team at the Sternwarte, who offered their telescopes and qualified advice to other attendants.

Stages of the lunar eclipse, 28 September 2015, as visible from Sternwarte Radebeul

On this night I also got to observe other celestial bodies. This being my second visit to the observatory, the solar eclipse in March now followed by the lunar eclipse of September, which was closing the cycle of eclipses for this year.

As the Northern sky cleared up we were shown for example galaxies M 82 and M 83. Venus rose above the planetarium, followed by Mars (then located beneath Regulus and the constellation Leo) and Jupiter, who’s moons and bands could be seen through the large reflecting telescope. Below you see the three planets align above the planetarium in the East. They will be joined by Mercury in October.

Venus, Mars, Jupiter

Further South-East the Orion nebula was barely visible with the naked eye but through the telescope one could clearly see the luminescent “wings” of the gas cloud as well as four bright stars across the nebula, which I assume were the trapezium cluster. The “nebula” is also known as M 42. It is part of a large gas cloud spanning all the way through Orion, but only parts of this cloud are visible. We learnt back in the days of renaissance astronomy and comet hunting anything that was not a comet and could not be defined nearer was called a “nebula”. Today we know new stars are born inside the gas cloud, which ionize the surrounding hydrogen molecules, causing them to beam.

In the meantime the sky had cleared up and we could now see the moon in all its glory, as it was exiting the earth’s umbra and penumbra before setting in the West. At dawn we were also rewarded with a magical view over the Elbe valley, where fog was gathering and the city was slowly waking up.

Brujeria

6 Aug

Brujeria, 4-Aug. ’15, concert at Chemiefabrik Dresden

“Fuck Donald Trump European Tour”

I arrived the moment Brujeria started playing, so sadly missed out on Dresden’s Bezerk. (Next time!) The Brujeria gig was smoking hot. The concert room was crowded and people were moshing and stage diving to the Mexican-American death metal / grindcore mix. I quickly wriggled myself through the crowd and hurried to empty my beer whilst photographing and headbanging. In the middle I got hit from the front by a stage diver and for a moment was convinced my camera had been crushed through the impact. I was about to make peace with the circumstance of having sacrificed my camera during a Brujeria gig. Well, turns out this was not the case and I could continue photographing and headbanging.

The concert was a hell lot of fun and went by rather quickly, even though the band played a plethora of songs from different eras (see setlist below). I was especially amazed by the female grind vocals. Since 2000 Gaby Domingez alias Pititis lends her woman power to the line-up. Her brutal growls along with the costumes and performance contrast and add glamour to the otherwise straightforward stage show. Having been on tour in Europe for 3 weeks the performance at Chemiefabrik was neat and sure worth the ticket. The European tour continues for another 3 weeks. Find the remaining tour dates on the band’s Facebook page.

Brujeria consists of members from different other well-known line-ups, such as Carcass and Napalm Death. Their music is a groovy, rhythmic blend of death metal and grindcore with some punk influences. Despite writing their songs entirely in Spanish and dressing up as Mexican drug lords and police, they are not of Mexican origin. The song texts are dealing with topics such as death, sex, politics, the mexican war on drugs, sorcery and satanism. The motto on the current tour shirts reads “Fuck you puto” written over the face of Donald Trump.

Regina Bombina

"Regina Bombina", ink, 2017

“Regina Bombina”, ink, 2017

My contribution to the mystery and folklore surrounding the bumblebee. This sigil is inspired by my garden work and continues my line of magical images dedicated to the otherworldly emanations that cross between plant, animal and human realm.

Watch this awesome documentary about bumblebees: www.3sat.de/mediathek/?mode=pl…

Did you know? Bumblebees collect up to 5 times as much pollen and nectar daily as honey bees. In the animal realm they are the fastest at recognizing colors. No other insect cares as devotedly for their offspring as bumblebees.

More Throwback: Dissection Midsummer Massacre

11 Jul

DISSECTION

Recently a fan commissioned prints of my Dissection Midsummer Massacre photos. I used the opportunity and re-edited all of the official photos, as well some photos that have not been shared yet. Among them is this red photo of Jon. Due to the motion of the camera the candles on the stage altar are forming eleven numbers seven. I thought this was a nice detail, hence this date of 11/7.

Another photo I had not shared before is one of Jon and Erik Danielsson, rocking beside each other. It surely was a strange twist of fate that Erik would jump in for this very last concert in the history of Dissection. Yet on stage he fit in as any long-time member of a band would. I remember Jon commenting, how Erik was an artistic person and switching instruments would come just natural to him. He learnt the songs really quick. Erik put his heart and soul into the performance – as he always does.

Throwback: The Devil’s Blood

11 Jul

The Devil’s Blood, photos of the concert at Festsaal Kreuzberg, Berlin, 12/01 2012

These are photos I have not shared before and which, together with previously released photos, are being printed and then mailed to FL. Earlier a fan asked me for prints. FL said I could do whatever I want with these pics (nice gesture). So yes, you can order from me prints as a physical memory of this concert.

Of course a photo can only preserve a fragment of the intensity and emotions of the actual event. For me the photographing is part of the concert experience; I’m head-banging and photographing all at once. Hence the pics may turn out blurry or grainy. Yet there is always something interesting to find; with these photos I especially like the vibrancy of the colors in some as well as the mood in the red ones. To view the the full set go here.
