Green Sea Turtle
We visited Stralsund end of 2013… as a kid I loved the marine Museum and was excited to see how it looked today! The turtles are now kept more species appropriate (as far as this is even possible in captivity). They have a larger tank, which is 4,5 meter deep and contains 350 000 liter water. The turtles are kept together with other animals such as blacktip reef sharks and can be observed through a 21 centimeters thick acryl glass window, weighing 6 600 kilograms.
“Sea turtles are on the very top of the list of the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and enjoy therefore – at least formally – the highest protection status. At the museum they are kept in a quantity and under conditions that would allow mating.“
